The brand’s nine store in Stockton, Hull, Leeds, Nottingham, Knaresborough, Darlington, Gateshead, Battersea and Newcastle upon Tyne mirrors its influence as the largest furniture retailer in the United Kingdom.

Just as the war between the Allies was nearing its end and soldiers scheme their post-war realities, two Royal Air Force men had a concrete plan on a way forward. Before it ended, Charles Barker and Alex Stonehouse preserved their common conception through the war and when it was over the business was established in Civvie Street, where the first shop was opened in Bishopton Lane, Stockon in 1946. Furniture and functionality were the order of the day but both men were able to see beyond this. Barker and Storehouse’s philosophy was down to style and elegance.  Frank Barker (Charles’s brother) joined the duo the same year the first store was opened. The family tie of the company became stronger with Charles’s son (Richard) joining the establishment too in 1960. In 1974 the business already had the organization of a modern company. Richard Barker restructured the setup of the company by acquiring the shares of Frank Barker and Alex Stonehouse. With the development, he assumed the majority shareholder and Managing Director of the outfit. The company has since grown into a potent force to be reckoned with in the high street of furniture and interior design- staying up to speed with the changes in the industry.
